Oct 3rd Principal's Update

Dear OBE families,

As you heard earlier, OBE will not lose a classroom teacher due to under enrollment. That is great news for the stability of our students. Unfortunately we are scheduled to have a reduction in Special Education staffing. At the moment I am reviewing the new reduced allocation with the district HR dept. to explore options. I have spoken to specific families regarding any changes that will occur. I will keep you updated as I receive any new information.

Tomorrow marks the start of the school choice window for the 2022-23 school year at San Diego Unified, giving families the chance to enroll next year in specialty magnet programs or schools outside their neighborhood boundaries. This application window will be open from October 4 through November 15, 2021; all applications are given equal priority regardless of when they are received.

The choice program is open to all existing San Diego Unified students, as well as out of district students, and students attending schools in other settings such as private or charter schools.

For questions about school choice, the district's Neighborhood Schools and Enrollment Options staff are offering assistance via email, phone, and in person by appointment. Please note, our UTK program will also be accepting enrollment for the fall of 2021 beginning tomorrow. Please contact Ilse Diaz for more information. She can be reached at [email protected].

Come and find out about the Point Loma Cluster Schools Foundation at our first meeting of the year on Monday, October 4 at 4:30 pm. We will be voting on Board members. We are looking to fill the treasurer position. If you are interested, you can reach out to Laura Choukri at [email protected]. We will also be talking about what information you would like to learn about this coming year. Join us via Zoom at https://sandiegounified.zoom.us/j/9163392326

Please remember to send your child with a refillable water bottle and a healthy snack every day. We are unable to regularly provide snacks to students. Also, for morning drop off and afternoon pick up, please make sure you are obeying all traffic laws. We have had families parking in red zones or in the street to drop children off. I know how tight parking is around OBE but it can create an unsafe situation if cars are parked in red zones or stopped in the street to let children out. I appreciate the cooperation.

In partnership,

Marco Drapeau
